Fewer Australian Adults Gamble in Average Three-Month Period Compared to Year Ago

Today, the Australian market research company Roy Morgan released the results of a new research, according to which 49.1% of adult Australian citizens gambled in an average three-month period within the twelve months which ended in March 2018. The figure represented a decline from the result reported a year ago, when more than half (50.6%) of the Australians over 18 years of age gambling at the time.

According to the local research firm, the result also represented a gradually decreasing trend in the gambling industry across all categories. The trend of overall decline has been registered in spite of the rapid increase in the number of gambling services available to customers, such as online and mobile betting.

The results were announced as the latest findings from the Roy Morgan Single Source database, which is built from a research of more than 50,000 customers on an annual basis. In addition, the surveys included more thorough questions of more than 7,000 players which were interviewed in person within their homes.

The Chief Executive Officer of Roy Morgan, Michele Levine, reminded that gambling is an activity in which about half of the Australian people take part within a 3-month period. This statistics, however, did not provide information about the varying behaviours of such a large number of gamblers. As revealed by Ms. Morgan, 34.1% of the 3.4 people who are engaged in sports betting at least once on an annual basis, use gambling options available online, with their number being considerably higher than the number of people playing online casino games (13.2%) or online poker (6.2%).

Variety of Gambling Forms Observed by Roy Morgan Experts

Thanks to the survey results and the in-depth gambling data gathered by Roy Morgan, the research firm revealed that its experts were able to observe the variety of gambling forms as a whole, as well as the gambling categories a customer prefers to participate in, but also the ones which are not preferred by Australian players.

The research firm also published a diagram to demonstrate the complexity of the gambling market in the country. According to the data revealed, a total of 7.8 million local citizens played Lottery or Scratch cards in an average 3-month period, with these two gambling options being the only forms of gambling for 5.1 million Australians. The data analysis also showed that 1.9 million Australians bet on sports, with this being the only form of gambling for 405,000. Last, but not least, 3.1 million adult local citizens were engaged in some level of gambling activities such as casino games or poker, with these forms of gambling being the only ones they practice.

Apart from the information about the local citizens who were engaged only in certain categories, the data provided by Roy Morgan allowed the research firm to make further observations on the gambling habits of adult Australian citizens.

According to information provided by the Australian research company, a total of 722,000 adults participate in both lotteries or scratch cards and sports betting but do not take part in gaming activities. On the other hand, 241,000 citizens over 18 years of age engage in gaming and betting, but do not participate in lottery draws or scratch cards, while a pretty impressive number of 1.4 million engage in lotteries and gaming, but not in sports betting activities. It also turns out that approximately 3% of the Australian population, or 568,000 people, take part in all three aforementioned types of gambling.

Recently, Roy Morgan released some information in terms of online gambling in Australia. According to the data provided by the research company, it is mobile betting which boosts online gambling operations in the country.
